Manual Machinist/Hydraulic Technician

Charles Foster is now recruiting for a Manual Machinist/Hydraulic Technician opportunity in the North Charleston area.

Duties can include but are not limited to:

  • Setting up and operating conventional, and fitting and assembling machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques
  • Fitting and assembling parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools
  • Possibly operating welding equipment
  • Possibly developing specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.  May confer with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
  • Diagnosing problems and giving recommendations for repairs
  • Using schematics and diagnostic equipment to investigate hydraulic or pneumatic system problems
  • Evaluating, tearing down and repairing cylinders, pumps, motor and power units
  • Inspecting parts and various components. Determining if parts are re-workable and writing up service reports
  • Reassembling components when repair is complete and preparing for delivery to customers

HVAC Mechanic

Charles Foster is now looking for qualified individuals for a HVAC Mechanic position in the Charleston area. This is a unionized direct hire position which offers a competitive hourly rate and a health and welfare stipend.

This role is responsible for assuring that numerous computer rooms, laboratories and food storage facilities operate at maximum efficiency with an absolute minimum of down-time. Down-time causes extreme inconvenience to operators of these facilities and can adversely affect national security.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing maintenance, diagnostic testing overhauling, installation, and repairing a large variety of sophisticated refrigeration, dehumidification, air-conditioning, ventilation, and heating systems equipment. The systems serve critically controlled environmental installations.
  • Researching specifications and making installation corrections required to assure proper function of equipment as required by tenant agency requirements.

Mandatory Qualifications:

    • A minimum of (5) five years’ experience as a refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic under general supervision and is responsible for determining work methods, trade techniques, equipment and materials to be used in accomplishing assignments.
  • Certification of completion for refrigerant transition and recovery certification program as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.


    • Within ninety (90) days of the contract start date, the technician must attend and gain certification (passing) through the manufacturer on major refrigeration units (>100 tons, all types) to better understand the operational components and troubleshooting techniques of the machinery.
    • A thorough and advanced knowledge of every cycle and its components; such as electronic circuitry, high and low voltage electricity, pneumatic and electronic control systems that sense minute changes in temperature and humidity, dew points, air water and refrigerant pressures; air and water flow and overload protection.
    • Skill and technical ability to interpret so as to complete installations and repairs as required and must be able to apply advanced trade techniques to modify and execute in order to minimize equipment down-time.
  • Current certification in maintenance and controls of Liebert Precision cooling systems XDV, CRV, Mini Mate type units.


  • Be trained by the EMS manufacturer and well-versed in the understanding of sequencing of operational equipment and operation of an Energy Management, computer-based controls system (ALC and Schneider Electric) and be able to administer changes on a given notice.
  • A working knowledge of other trades such as: sheet metal; fire dampers, zone control, air flow volume and velocity and damper linkages. Plumbing; water and steam supply, drainage, gravity systems, condensate, water make up evaporation and human protection systems. Electric; circuit breakers, relays, solenoids, transformers, timers, electromagnetic contactors vacuum tubes, motors and motor controls and overload protection devices.
  • Proficient in all types of soldering and brazing.
  • Well versed in the use of many and varied types of test equipment such as volt-meters, ammeters, amprobes, psychrometers, capacitor analyzer temperature testers, leak detectors, micrometer, CO2 testers, vacuum gauges, meggers.
  • Experienced in operating complex and multiple building management systems to include:
  • Harris Integrated Controls
  • Schneider HVAC controls
  • Notifier fire alarm systems
  • Lutron Lighting systems controlsB
  • Be familiar with data trending and reporting within these systems components and must be familiar with and have used the ALC Building Management System.
